Which is better, the Honda Odyssey or the Honda Pilot?

A minivan and an SUV asking the same question: how many people, how much stuff

The Odyssey and Pilot both seat up to eight and share Honda’s 3.5-liter V6, but they’re built for different jobs. The Odyssey is a minivan optimized for hauling people and cargo with the lowest possible hassle: sliding doors, a low load floor, and the most interior room Honda sells. The Pilot is a three-row SUV built for buyers who want higher ground clearance, available all-wheel drive, and more traditional SUV looks, and who are willing to trade some cargo room to get it.

Price: close enough that it’s not the deciding factor

A base Odyssey EX-L runs about $42,795, while a base Pilot Sport starts around $42,195 before the $1,495 destination charge, essentially a wash once destination is added on both. Don’t pick between these two on sticker price alone; the real differences show up in space, drivetrain, and how each one actually feels to drive and park.

Space: the Odyssey wins by a wide margin

This is the Odyssey’s whole reason to exist. With up to 140.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo room and 86.6 cubic feet behind the second row, versus the Pilot’s 60.1 cubic feet behind its second row, the Odyssey swallows strollers, luggage, and big-box hauls that would max out the Pilot. If cargo and passenger room are the priority, this isn’t close.

Capability: the Pilot answers with AWD and SUV ground clearance

The Pilot offers Honda’s i-VTM4 all-wheel-drive system and more ground clearance than the front-wheel-drive-only Odyssey, along with more conventional SUV styling. For buyers who want light off-pavement confidence, all-weather traction, or simply don’t want to drive a minivan, that’s the whole case for paying roughly the same money for meaningfully less cargo space.

Fuel economy and safety: close on mpg, mixed on safety recognition

Both are close on fuel economy: the Odyssey and a front-wheel-drive Pilot both land around 22 mpg combined, though Pilot AWD and TrailSport trims dip to 21 and 20 mpg respectively. On safety, neither vehicle earned a spot on the 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick list, no minivan made that year’s list at all, and the Pilot’s 2026 IIHS status hadn’t been separately confirmed at the time of writing, even though the outgoing 2025 Pilot had earned Top Safety Pick+. Check IIHS.org for current model-year ratings before deciding on safety alone.

The verdict

Choose the Odyssey if cargo room, easy loading, and minivan practicality matter more to your family than styling, its space advantage is large and real. Choose the Pilot if you want available all-wheel drive, more ground clearance, or simply prefer SUV looks over a minivan, that’s the entire trade you’re making for meaningfully less cargo room. Check current IIHS ratings for both before deciding on safety, since neither made the 2026 Top Safety Pick list and ratings can update model-year to model-year.
